Sudanese Arabic

Though as many as 134 Languages are spoken in Sudan, Arabic is the country's official language. Our module focuses on the dialect spoken in Khartoum and is designed to be a primer in the Sudanese dialect of Arabic for students who have an intermediate to high level of proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic, providing an opportunity to familiarize with the sounds, vocabulary, and grammar of Sudanese Arabic.

As in many parts of the world, the FIFA World Cup Tournament commands the attention of many. In 2010, the World Cup took place in South Africa. Though far from the Horn of Africa, many there shared the excitement of the first World Cup staged on the African continent. This short film captures some of the tension between the demands of work and watching World Cup matches. The characters also explore some of the debates around African football. The same situation is offered in five languages.

The Frog and the Scorpion ~ Classic Folktale in Tigrinya

While many cultures claim this folktale as their own, it has found a place in Eritrea. Here we present the story in Tigrinya and English with subtitles in both languages. The montage of visual details come from Eritrea and other parts of East Africa. Students of all ages can enjoy it for the story as well as to practice listening and comprehension skills in either language.
