Understanding the Horn of Africa

Introduction

From 2005 to 2013, the Center for African Studies undertook two projects, Understanding Sudan and Understanding the Horn of Africa, to provide university-level curriculum addressing issues affecting countries in the Horn of Africa: Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan. The United States Department of Education provided funding through the Title VI International Research and Studies grant program. Over time, the backend technical infrastructure for each website evolved leading to a migration of the material onto new servers with different underlying coding and content management systems. We first subsumed the Access database driven Understanding Sudan site into a Drupal 7 based Horn of Africa site. Anticipating the end-of-life of Drupal 7, we retired the Understanding the Horn of Africa site in August 2023. The Web Archive has snapshots of both sites. Some material from those projects is linked below, on the YouTube channels and on the Understanding the Horn eScholarship site, all listed below. We will continue to archive material from those sites here and on the eScholarship site.
